The number one contributing factor to the swift spread of fire and smoke within a home is upholstered furniture. The interior furnishings that are manufactured today, such as couches, recliners, loveseats and bed mattresses, are made using various types of synthetic material. Include the polyurethane foam padding and cushions and you have a very volatile fuel source to feed a fire. Even decorating accents such as curtains, drapes, valances, and rugs can dramatically contribute to the spread of fire. Interior furnishing are responsible for the majority of the thick, toxic, black smoke that can quickly fill a home or business during the early stages of a fire. In most cases, it is the toxic smoke that kills the occupants, not the fire itself.
